A study to examine the changes between 1996 and 2004 with respect to numbers of animals handled, medical care provided, and agency policies for animal care.

The results suggest that the status of dogs handled by animal care agencies in Ohio improved between 1996 and 2004, but that the status of cats deteriorated.

The total number of animals handled in 2004 decreased from 1996 by 7%.

The total number of dogs taken in decreased by 17% although the number of cats increased by 20% during this time period.

The euthanasia rate dropped from 65% to 57% from 199 to 2004 while the adoption rate increased from 25% to 34% over this same time period.

The number of dog euthanizations decreased 39% but the number of cat euthanizations increased by 14%.

The proportion of agencies with a spay-neuter policy increased from 56% to 71%. The proportion of agencies with a vet association increased from 39% to 80%.
